Objects of experience.
As human beings, we seek certain kinds of experiences to find something we need, whether it is social interaction, entertainment, aesthetics, and many more.
Objects in our lives act as a functional tool, but also, they can give us a certain experience, evoke feelings, and affect our behavior, especially when we are able to interact and play with them.
In this project, we experiment and explore a new way to provide experience through jewelry. We play around with different kinds of mechanisms to allow the wearer to have an enjoyable interaction with the jewelry.
Gravity has been a source of idea for many types of objects and it intrigued us to find a different approach to the idea of jewelry mechanism. We found it interesting when one part of an object can be attached firmly by using the force of gravity. Just as we saw in this acrobatic pose. The design is also inspired by streamline style, a style that brings sleekness & modernity.
The main idea we found in this acrobatic pose is the body weight works against the ring, so the two can sustain each other. With this in mind, we explored that idea for the lock system in jewelry. And it leads to an idea to make the design convertible.
The initial sketches are about finding the best lock system. In the first design, the lock has an elongated shape, and it require a 90 degree rotation to detach the center module from the frame. The second one has a different shape of the lock and the rotation is in a smaller angle. Finally, we decided to go with the third design with a much simpler mechanism
In the third design, the bar attached to the module can move along the rail and drop to the bottom to secure itself to the frame. We made the bar in half-cylinder shape so it can move freely on the rail, while still holding the module steady and prevent it from rotating.
The final exploration is on the overall shape and details of the frame and detachable modules.
